Yakshagana

Hi All,

It brings me immense pride in writing about yet another folk of Karnataka - Yakshagana. I happened to visit an aata in recent past! I'll start by explaining these terminologies!

In one of my previous talk on Talamaddle, I had already mentioned Yakshagana. Revisiting those concepts here! Yakshagana is form of art with mixture of story, drama, acting, dancing, singing and costumes. This musical form is one among the state recognised folk dance. It bring me pride in mentioning, it is original to my native place in Karnataka.
For those of who don't know here are some terms used in Yakshagana. Generally a troop of all artists in Yakshagana is called "Mela". Some of the divine places own a Mela of their own eg: Dharmastala Mela, Mandarthi Mela etc. Each Mela starts from their place performing across state and get back to same place before rain starts.
Individual performance in Yakshagana is "Aata". When people ask for particular wish from God, they would commit to enable one of these aata. So when wishes are full filled, they would schedule suitably. Each Mela, would have a storyline revolving around the importance of the city of Mela. This storyline is "Prasanga". Singer are called Bhagwat and the cast are Patradhari. One which I visited was Mandarthi Mela performing Kshetra Mahatme aata.

I have watched these musical form from years. And it is hard for me to explain all its glory in words. All these art forms are majorly facing the issue of appreciation these days. Lack of performance space or lack of crowd to cheer them through the night for an aata has diminished over time. So if possible try to witness these art forms in live. Lastly, I would like to honour some great artists -
   1. Padma Shri Chittani Ramachandra Hegde
   2. Keremane Shivarama Hegde
   3. Naranappa Uppoor
   4. Kalinga Navada
